Why do giraffes have long necks?

There can be no doubt that the neck and forelegs of the giraffe are long relative to the proportions found in almost all other ungulates. What cannot be said with any good certainty however, is exactly why this is the case. To know that, a scribe would have had to follow every giraffe around since the beginning of time, recording every event and cirstance. Without that sort of history, we can only observe the behavior of modern giraffes and infer as to why they have long necks.
